Cultural Work on Skwachàys

PARCEL is a digital publication by Access Gallery (Vancouver), which seeks to understand the gallery’s position as a cultural venue at the centre of multiple stories, histories, neighbourhoods, and waterways.

Access Gallery’s presence on the unceded territories of the Musqueam, Squamish, and Tsleil-Waututh peoples, in the midst of Vancouver’s Chinatown, and on the edge of Hogan’s Alley (a historically Black community displaced by the construction of the Georgia Viaduct) places us among stories of convergence and displacement, colonial violence, and gentrification; but also among ongoing acts of resistance, joy, and care.

What does it mean to invite art into this place? How can we embody multiple truths and histories, create generative futures, and cultivate connection and collaboration with the land?

PARCEL was curated and edited by Meera Eragoda, with support from Katie Belcher.
PARCEL was designed and published by Kitt Peacock, Farah ElAfifi, and sevin shabankareh at Access Gallery.

With gratitude as uninvited guests, Access is located on the unceded and ancestral territories of the xwməθkwəy̓əm (Musqueam), Skwxwú7mesh (Squamish), and Səl̓ílwətaʔɬ/Selilwitulh (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations.

Access additionally recognizes its location in Vancouver’s Chinatown, an area for the gathering of predominantly Cantonese-speaking Chinese labourers, settlers, and businesses since the nineteenth century. Our gallery borders the site of Hogan’s Alley, an important home to Vancouver’s Black population until their forced displacement through the construction of the Georgia viaduct fifty years ago.
